Visitation Policies & Protocol

Please Do Not Touch Artwork

Special care must be taken to preserve artwork and maintain the presentation of each exhibition. We ask that you not touch because the oils on your skin will damage the surface of a painting, discolor bronze or rust steel. Please help us preserve our artwork for other visitors and for future generations.

Photography and Video

You are always allowed to take photographs in the following areas: Harper-Roddey Grand Lobby, Performance Suite, and the Rooftop Terrace. Photography and videotaping of most artwork is forbidden. Signage is posted when photography is permitted in the galleries. Photography of special and/or traveling exhibitions is not allowed. Flashes, tripods, monopods, and video cameras are not permitted.

Cell Phones

In the interest of maintaining an enjoyable environment for all our visitors, we ask that you place your cell phone on silent mode or turn it off completely while in the galleries. If you receive a phone call, please leave the galleries to have your conversation.

Animals

Pets and non-service animals are not permitted in the building. Service animals (guide dogs) are welcome.

Weapons

Firearms or dangerous weapons of any kind are not permitted on the premises.

Tobacco

Smoking is prohibited inside the building. The use of smokeless tobacco is also prohibited while in the building.

Inappropriate Conduct

At no time will an individual and/or individuals engage in any activity that is dangerous and/or inappropriate to other visitors, staff or artwork.

Lost or Stolen Items

The Gantt Center is not responsible for lost or stolen items.

Copyright and Use of Content

Text and images published on this website are the sole property of the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture and are copyrighted. Redistribution is not allowed without permission. Permission to reproduce works of art, in any format, held by the Gantt Center must be obtained in writing from the Collections & Exhibition Department. Members of the media should contact the Marketing Department at (704) 547-3700 to request images for publication. Unauthorized reproduction is an infringement of the United States copyright law. The Gantt reserves the right to deny permission to photograph or film on its premises.

Fair Use Permitted

In addition to the above license, "fair use" (as defined by U.S. copyright laws) of the content is also permitted. Fair use of copyrighted material includes the use of protected materials for noncommercial, educational purposes, such as teaching, scholarship, research, criticism, commentary, and news reporting. However, you must cite (refer to) the author and source of this material as you would material from any printed work.
